Authorities in Sagar district say five people have died and dozens more have been hospitalized after consuming suspected poisonous liquor in villages of the Banda block.

Sagar district officials reported that five residents of villages in the Banda block have succumbed to poisoning after drinking liquor suspected to be laced with toxic substances. Dozens of other villagers were rushed to nearby hospitals with symptoms ranging from severe vomiting to loss of consciousness.
The district police have launched an investigation, sealing several illegal liquor outlets and confiscating large quantities of the suspect brew. Health officials from the state’s medical department are conducting toxicology tests to identify the exact contaminant and to trace the source of the illicit production.
Medical teams at Sagar General Hospital have set up an emergency ward to treat the affected patients, urging anyone who consumed the drink to seek immediate medical attention. The incident adds to a series of recent cases of spurious liquor across Madhya Pradesh, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of liquor licensing and public awareness campaigns.
Local authorities have appealed to the community to cooperate with the investigation and warned that those found responsible for manufacturing or distributing the poisonous liquor will face severe legal action under the state's excise and public health laws.
