Heavy monsoon rains in Uttarakhand caused rivers to overflow and dislodged boulders onto highways, killing five people.

In the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, intense monsoon downpours caused rivers to burst their banks, sending torrents of water across nearby roads. The sudden surge also dislodged large boulders that rolled onto highways, creating deadly obstacles for commuters.

Rescue officials confirmed that five individuals lost their lives when the boulders struck vehicles traveling on the affected routes. Several other motorists were injured and required medical attention, while some vehicles were completely crushed under the rocks.

State disaster management teams were dispatched to the scene, clearing debris and conducting search‑and‑rescue operations. Authorities have warned residents to avoid travel on vulnerable stretches until the waters recede and the roads are declared safe.

The incident underscores the growing vulnerability of Uttarakhand’s terrain to extreme weather events, as the region grapples with increasingly erratic monsoon patterns.
