Local fishermen in Betul district have voiced strong opposition to a proposed dredging project on the Betul River, citing threats to fish stocks and their livelihoods.

In the town of Betul, fishermen gathered at the riverbank on Monday to protest a government plan to dredge the Betul River. The operation, aimed at improving navigation and reducing flood risk, has raised alarm among those who depend on the river for their livelihood.

The fishermen argue that dredging could disturb breeding grounds and reduce fish populations, jeopardizing their income. They fear that the removal of silt will alter the river’s ecosystem and make it less suitable for fish.

The group has approached the district administration and demanded a halt to the project until a comprehensive environmental impact assessment is carried out. The government has not yet issued a statement on the protests.
