Birdwatchers have documented the presence of two shrike species at Pong Lake in Himachal Pradesh, marking the first such observation in the region.
Birdwatchers and ornithologists reported the sighting of two shrike species at Pong Lake in Himachal Pradesh earlier this week. The species, identified as the common shrike and the lesser shrike, were observed nesting in the surrounding scrub and feeding on insects. This marks the first confirmed record of these species in the Pong Lake area, expanding the known range of shrikes in the state.
The observation was made by a local birding group during a routine survey of the lake’s avifauna. Photographs and field notes were shared with the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, which confirmed the identification.
Experts say the discovery highlights the ecological importance of Pong Lake’s wetlands and the need for continued monitoring of bird populations in the region.
