Astronomers have identified a microblazar inside our galaxy, marking the first time such a near‑light‑speed jet from a black hole has been observed in the Milky Way.
Indian and international astronomers analysing data from high‑resolution radio telescopes have announced the discovery of a microblazar within the Milky Way. The object, located several thousand light‑years from Earth, exhibits a narrow jet of particles moving at a speed close to that of light, a characteristic previously seen only in extragalactic blazars.
The team used Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) to pinpoint the source and measure its rapid variability, confirming that the jet is pointed almost directly toward our line of sight. This orientation amplifies the observed emission, allowing scientists to study the physics of black‑hole jets in unprecedented detail inside our own galaxy.
The finding expands the known population of relativistic jet sources and provides a nearby laboratory for testing models of particle acceleration and magnetic field dynamics near black holes. Researchers plan follow‑up observations across the electromagnetic spectrum to map the jet’s structure and assess its impact on the surrounding interstellar medium.
