First cyclonic disturbance of the season likely to form over Andaman Sea, says IMD

The India Meteorological Department warned that the season’s first cyclonic system could develop over the Andaman Sea, with heavy rains expected in Andhra Pradesh from September 19.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a bulletin on Monday indicating that a low‑pressure area over the Andaman Sea has the potential to intensify into the season’s first cyclonic disturbance. Meteorologists noted favourable sea‑surface temperatures and low vertical wind shear, conditions that could support cyclogenesis within the next 48 hours.

If the system consolidates, it may move west‑northwestward, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the eastern coast of mainland India. The IMD has placed the area under a ‘Cyclone Watch’ and is closely monitoring the disturbance for any rapid changes in intensity.

Simultaneously, the department forecasted widespread heavy rain over Andhra Pradesh beginning on September 19, as the system’s outer bands are expected to affect the state. Local authorities have been advised to prepare for possible flooding and landslides, especially in low‑lying and hilly regions.

The IMD urged residents in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, to stay alert, secure property, and follow instructions from disaster‑management agencies. Updates will be provided every six hours as the situation evolves.

The agency emphasized that the system remains under observation and that any escalation to a cyclonic storm will trigger higher‑level warnings and emergency response measures.
