Financial roadblock stalls ₹2,101 crore Jahanabad‑Biharsharif railway project

The Bihar government’s plan to lay a new railway line between Jahanabad and Biharsharif, intended to improve regional connectivity, remains on hold. The project, estimated at ₹2,101 crore, was submitted for financial approval earlier this year.
Officials from the state’s transport department say the central finance ministry has deferred clearance, citing the line’s low revenue‑generation potential. The projected passenger and freight traffic is deemed insufficient to justify the large capital outlay.
Without the necessary funding approval, construction activities cannot commence, delaying the expected benefits such as reduced travel time and boosted economic activity in the Jahanabad‑Nalanda corridor. The state is reportedly exploring alternative financing options, but no new timeline has been announced.
