Female cheetah 'Nirva' missing in Kuno National Park; 500‑m signal loss raises forest dept concerns

A satellite‑collared female cheetah, Nirva, has not been located for four to five days in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park, prompting the forest department to launch a large‑scale search with over 100 personnel.
The forest department of Madhya Pradesh reported that the satellite‑tagged female cheetah named Nirva has been out of range for the past four to five days within Kuno National Park. The collar’s last known signal was detected roughly 500 metres away from its previous location, heightening concerns about the animal’s safety.
In response, the department has mobilised five search teams comprising more than 100 forest officials and wildlife experts. The teams are combing the park on foot while employing drones and CCTV footage to trace any movement that might indicate Nirva’s whereabouts.
Officials said the operation will continue until the cheetah’s collar transmits a stable signal again. The loss of a high‑profile animal like Nirva is being closely monitored, as it is part of the park’s ongoing cheetah re‑introduction programme aimed at restoring the species in central India.
