Authorities in Odisha have uncovered counterfeit paneer being sold in local markets, prompting a food‑safety investigation.

Kanak News Odisha reported that law‑enforcement officials have identified batches of paneer that do not meet standard quality norms being sold in several markets across the state. The product, described as "fake" by officials, is suspected of containing adulterants that could pose health risks to consumers.

The discovery was made during routine market inspections, after which samples were sent to a state food‑testing laboratory for verification. Preliminary results indicated that the cheese lacked the expected milk protein content and showed signs of substitution with cheaper ingredients.

State food‑safety officials have ordered the seizure of the suspect stock and have begun tracing the supply chain to locate the source. Retailers found selling the product have been instructed to remove it from shelves and face possible penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Consumers are advised to purchase paneer only from reputable vendors and to check for proper labeling and certification. The department will continue to monitor the market and conduct further inspections to prevent similar incidents.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have pledged to update the public as more information becomes available.
