On the 46th day of their strike, workers in Napier are still on the streets, pressing authorities to enforce the pending PPS scheme.
The strike that began in Napier more than six weeks ago shows no sign of abating, as employees marked the 46th consecutive day of protest on Saturday. Demonstrators gathered outside the district administration office, holding placards and chanting slogans that call for the immediate rollout of the PPS programme.
The core demand of the workers is the implementation of the PPS, a scheme they say was promised by the state government but has yet to be operationalised. They argue that the scheme is essential for securing their benefits and improving working conditions.
Local officials have been approached repeatedly by the protest leaders, but a definitive response has not been issued. The administration has indicated that discussions are ongoing, while urging the demonstrators to maintain peace.
The prolonged demonstration has begun to affect routine services in the area, with some government offices reporting reduced footfall and minor disruptions to public utilities. Authorities have deployed additional police personnel to manage crowds and prevent any escalation.
