An elephant named Bifra lifted and threw a 60‑year‑old man who was grazing cattle in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, leaving him injured.
Chhindwara district in Madhya Pradesh witnessed a rare wildlife‑human clash on Tuesday when a wild elephant, identified by locals as Bifra, attacked a 60‑year‑old man who had gone out to graze his cattle. The elephant approached the herd, seized the elderly herder, lifted him off the ground and threw him several metres away, causing bruises and a possible fracture, according to eyewitnesses.
The victim, who was tending to cows and bulls in a field near the village outskirts, was rescued by nearby residents who rushed to his aid after the animal retreated. He was immediately taken to the nearest health centre where doctors reported non‑life‑threatening injuries and advised a short period of observation.
Local authorities have been alerted and forest officials are monitoring the area for any further elephant movement. The incident has sparked fear among villagers, prompting calls for stronger measures to prevent similar encounters in the future.
