A senior resident of Mohali was duped of two lakh rupees after fraudsters pretended to be a relative calling from Canada and promised a visa.
Mohali police reported that an elderly resident was contacted by callers claiming to be a relative based in Canada. The fraudsters used the pretext of securing a foreign visa to gain the victim's trust and requested a payment of two lakh rupees to process the alleged paperwork.
The victim, unaware of the scam, transferred the amount to the account provided by the callers. No visa was issued, and the callers disappeared after receiving the money. Authorities confirmed that the scheme targeted senior citizens, exploiting their aspirations for overseas travel or family reunification.
Local police have launched an investigation, urging the public to verify any unsolicited calls related to visas or overseas opportunities. They advised citizens to refrain from sending money without official documentation and to report suspicious calls to the cybercrime helpline.
