As El Nino strengthens, monsoon showers have become limited to the heart of India, leaving most regions dry.
The Indian monsoon this season is being reshaped by the early onset of El Nino, which is suppressing rainfall across large parts of the country. Meteorological agencies note that the typical west‑east progression of monsoon clouds has stalled, with moisture largely trapped over the central plateau.
Rainfall is now largely restricted to the heartland – states such as Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and parts of Maharashtra are reporting scattered showers, while the northern plains, western coast and eastern seaboard remain below normal.
Officials warn that the uneven distribution could affect sowing schedules and water‑storage levels. The India Meteorological Department has issued advisories urging farmers to adopt drought‑mitigation measures and is closely monitoring the evolving El Nino impact for the remainder of the season.
