Eight residents of Sikkim who were stranded in Nepal after a sudden flash flood have safely returned to India, authorities said.
A sudden flash flood in a remote area of Nepal left eight travellers from Sikkim stranded for several days. The group, returning from a pilgrimage, was caught by rising waters that cut off the only road linking the valley to the main highway.
Local rescue teams, together with the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, coordinated an evacuation after locating the stranded party. The residents were airlifted to the nearest medical post and then escorted across the border by Indian border officials.
All eight individuals arrived back in Sikkim unharmed, and no injuries were reported. Officials said the incident highlights the need for better early‑warning systems in the trans‑border mountain regions.
The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed that the rescued citizens are now with their families and that a debrief will be conducted to improve future cross‑border emergency response.
