A car attempting to cross a swollen monsoon drain in Nalkheda, Madhya Pradesh, was swept away, killing eight pilgrims, including three children.

A vehicle carrying a group of pilgrims was caught in the surge of a rain‑filled drain in Nalkheda, Madhya Pradesh, and was swept away, resulting in eight fatalities. The victims included three children, two women and three other adults, all of whom were on a pilgrimage journey when the accident occurred.

Local authorities arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and recovered the bodies from the waterlogged channel. Rescue teams faced difficulty due to the fast‑moving water and the narrowness of the drain, which hampered immediate rescue efforts.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and announced an immediate financial assistance of four lakh rupees for each bereaved family. The government also promised to provide medical support and counseling to the surviving relatives.

The police have opened an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the mishap and to assess whether safety measures were lacking at the crossing point. Meanwhile, officials have urged pilgrims to avoid attempting to cross such water channels during heavy rainfall.
