Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower was closed to visitors on Thursday as France grappled with nationwide protests and labor strikes.
The Eiffel Tower, one of Paris' most visited landmarks, was officially closed to the public on Thursday after authorities cited safety concerns amid a wave of nationwide protests and strikes across France. The decision was announced by the tower's management in coordination with local police, who warned of potential disruptions and crowd control challenges.
The closures come as French labor unions have mobilised millions in demonstrations against proposed pension reforms, while other groups protest broader economic policies. Public transport, schools and several cultural venues have also been affected, prompting a surge in cancellations and heightened security measures in major cities.
Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo confirmed that the tower will remain shut until the situation stabilises, adding that officials are monitoring the protests closely and will reassess reopening plans within the next 48 hours. The temporary shutdown is expected to impact tourism revenues, but authorities stress that public safety remains the priority.
