From this week, more than 2,000 government schools will host 'Jala Mitra' student clubs to instill water‑saving habits among pupils.

The state Education Department has announced the launch of 'Jala Mitra' water‑conservation clubs across more than 2,000 government schools. The initiative, which began this week, aims to cultivate a habit of water preservation among school‑going children.

Each 'Jala Mitra' club will operate within the school campus, providing students with practical activities and awareness programmes focused on responsible water use. By integrating these clubs into the regular school environment, the department seeks to make water‑saving practices a routine part of students' daily lives.

The decision reflects the department's commitment to environmental education and addresses growing concerns about water scarcity. Officials expect that the widespread presence of the clubs will foster a generation of environmentally conscious citizens who actively contribute to water conservation efforts.

The rollout will be monitored by the Education Department, which plans to assess the impact of the clubs on student behaviour and expand the programme if successful.
