The Enforcement Directorate has arrested the former treasurer of the Indian National Congress’s Chhattisgarh unit over a Rs 3,000 crore liquor scam. The move follows investigations into alleged money laundering and illegal liquor sales linked to the party’s state machinery.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) took the former treasurer of the Indian National Congress’s Chhattisgarh unit into custody on Thursday, as part of a probe into a Rs 3,000 crore liquor scam. The arrest comes after the ED uncovered evidence of large‑scale illegal liquor sales and money laundering linked to the party’s state machinery.
According to ED officials, the former treasurer was allegedly involved in facilitating the procurement and sale of illicit liquor, diverting funds to private accounts. The investigation, which began earlier this year, has identified several financial irregularities and suspicious transactions.
The Congress party has denied any wrongdoing by its former treasurer, stating that the individual was a loyal party worker. Party leaders have called for a fair and transparent inquiry into the allegations.
The ED has said it will continue to investigate the case and may take further action against other parties involved. The arrest is expected to intensify scrutiny of political financing and liquor licensing in Chhattisgarh.
