The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken cognizance of harmful E‑coli bacteria found in water from more than 50 private borewells in Indore and has directed the municipal corporation and pollution control board to investigate, treat and take necessary action.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has formally taken note of laboratory reports that identified the presence of pathogenic E‑coli bacteria in water drawn from over 50 private borewells across Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

In response, the tribunal issued strict directives to the Indore Municipal Corporation and the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board to carry out comprehensive testing of the affected wells, ensure immediate water purification, and implement remedial measures to safeguard public health.

Authorities have been asked to monitor the quality of water on a regular basis, issue public advisories, and coordinate with health agencies to prevent potential outbreaks of water‑borne diseases.

The detection of E‑coli, a common indicator of fecal contamination, raises concerns about gastrointestinal infections among residents who rely on these private sources for drinking and domestic use.

The NGT’s intervention underscores the growing focus on water safety and the need for stringent oversight of private water extraction in urban areas.
