Dzongu in Sikkim Near 100% Solid Waste-Free Under Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin

Dzongu, a remote tribal area in the northeastern state of Sikkim, has been reported as almost entirely free of solid waste, with officials saying the region has reached near‑100% waste‑free status under the Swachh Bharat Mission‑Gramin (SBM‑G). The achievement reflects the concerted effort of local panchayats, community volunteers and the district administration to collect, segregate and dispose of waste in an environmentally sound manner.

The milestone is significant for a region that traditionally faced challenges in waste management due to its rugged terrain and limited infrastructure. By adopting source segregation, composting organic material and ensuring proper disposal of non‑biodegradable waste, Dzongu has set a benchmark for other hill districts under the national cleanliness drive.

State officials have hailed the result as a model for replicating SBM‑G initiatives in similar ecologically sensitive zones. They plan to sustain the gains through continuous awareness campaigns, regular monitoring and the introduction of small‑scale recycling units to keep the area clean and preserve its natural heritage.
