On October 8, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted a check at Lucknow railway station on a passenger who had arrived on the Vande Bharat Express from Howrah.
The man was found carrying 1.202 kg of gold of foreign origin, ingeniously hidden inside a knee‑cap. The precious metal is estimated to be worth roughly Rs 1.72 crore.
DRI officials said the seizure highlights the sophisticated methods smugglers employ to bypass customs controls and that the operation forms part of a broader anti‑smuggling drive across the country.
The passenger was detained for further questioning, and the recovered gold will be processed in accordance with existing customs regulations.
