The Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain observed Diwali with a pre‑dawn abhyanga bath for Lord Mahakal and five aartis punctuated by fireworks throughout the day.
Ujjain’s historic Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple marked the Diwali season with a series of distinctive rituals that drew large numbers of devotees. The celebrations began on the Chaturdashi day of the festival, when priests performed a ceremonial abhyanga (oil bath) for Lord Mahakal at 4 a.m., followed by a regal adornment of the deity.
The early‑morning ritual saw the idol immersed in sacred water and anointed with herbal oils, after which it was dressed in traditional royal attire, reflecting age‑old customs unique to the temple.
Throughout the day, five aartis were conducted at regular intervals. Each aarti was accompanied by the lighting of fuljhari fireworks, creating a vibrant visual spectacle that blended devotion with festivity. In addition, an Annakoot offering was prepared, symbolising abundance and communal sharing during the festival.
Temple authorities reported that the combined observances reinforced the cultural heritage of Ujjain and offered worshippers a memorable Diwali experience rooted in tradition.
