The Director General of Police has directed that customers of rented vehicles be registered, a move aimed at enhancing safety and accountability.

The Director General of Police (DGP) issued a directive today mandating that every customer who uses a rented vehicle be formally registered with the police. The order applies to all types of rental services, including cars, two‑wheelers and auto‑rickshaws, and is intended to create a reliable database of users for law‑enforcement purposes.

Under the new guideline, rental agencies will be required to collect basic identification details of their clients and forward the information to the nearest police station within a stipulated time frame. The police will maintain the records centrally and may use them for investigations, traffic management and emergency response.

Officials said the measure is aimed at curbing misuse of rental vehicles for criminal activities and improving overall road safety. The DGP has asked state police units to cooperate with rental operators and ensure smooth implementation across the country.

The directive does not specify any additional fees for customers; it merely adds a procedural step for agencies. Authorities will monitor compliance and may impose penalties on firms that fail to register their customers as required.
