Devi Mahatme, a Kannada film directed by Nagaraaj Somayaji, is set to release nationwide on 4 December. The director has clarified that the film is a social drama rather than a devotional or mythological story, focusing on contemporary societal values.
The title, which initially led audiences to expect a religious film, was chosen because of the local folklore of Kundanpur and the coastal region where the Yaksagan legend of ‘Devi Mahatme’ is famous. The film incorporates elements of this legend, and the title connects the narrative to the cultural context.
Rangayana Raju plays a pivotal role in the film, delivering a restrained performance that portrays a father’s emotional journey. The cast also features theatre talents such as Prashanth Hiremath of Mysuru, P.D. Satish, Aravind Kuppalekar, Basm Kodagu, Raghupandeshwar, Swetha Srinivasa, Mohan Shanai, Asif Khastia, and Pratima Naik, adding depth to the story.
The film’s storytelling eschews conventional templates, employing flashbacks and a unique visual style. S.K. Rao handled cinematography, while Likhith Prasad Shetty composed the music, which plays a significant role in the film’s narrative. The director, originally from Tamil Nadu, relied on the Kannada crew’s expertise to produce the film.
Janani Productions has secured distribution rights, and the film is ready for release across Karnataka on 4 December.
