A six‑month‑old male Ghodawan was killed by a desert fox in Jaisalmer’s Desert National Park, prompting the forest department and the Indian Wildlife Institute to reassess wildlife‑release protocols.
A six‑month‑old male Ghodawan was found dead after being preyed upon by a desert fox inside Jaisalmer’s Desert National Park. The incident occurred during a routine monitoring visit, when park officials discovered the carcass near a sand dune.
Following the fatal encounter, the Rajasthan Forest Department, in coordination with the Indian Wildlife Institute (IWI), announced an immediate review of the protocols governing the release and monitoring of captive‑bred wildlife in the park. Officials said the review will examine enclosure standards, post‑release surveillance, and predator‑prey management strategies.
The incident highlights the challenges of reintroducing vulnerable species into arid ecosystems where natural predators are present. Conservationists stress that robust safety measures are essential to balance species recovery goals with the ecological realities of the desert habitat.
