Delhi’s ‘Cockroach’ Protest Success Fuels Modi Critics

✍️ Financial Times 🗓 28 Jul 2026, 04:36 AM 👁 3

Massive protests in Delhi demanding action against widespread cockroach infestation have achieved tangible results, energising opposition voices against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration.

In recent weeks, thousands of Delhi residents marched through the capital’s streets demanding a comprehensive response to the city’s escalating cockroach infestation.

The protestors, many of whom had been living in overcrowded neighbourhoods with inadequate sanitation, called for immediate pest‑control measures and stricter enforcement of municipal bylaws. In response, the Delhi administration announced a city‑wide fumigation drive and pledged to upgrade waste‑management infrastructure.

Political analysts note that the swift governmental action, prompted by the protests, has emboldened critics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They see the episode as evidence that organised civil dissent can influence policy, challenging the narrative of unassailable authority.

While the government frames the initiative as a routine public‑health measure, opposition leaders are using the incident to highlight systemic governance gaps and to rally support for broader reforms.
