Delhi’s Air Quality Index Surpasses 400 at 20 Sites, Jahangirpuri Tops Pollution List

The capital recorded AQI levels above 400 at 20 monitoring points, with Jahangirpuri registering the highest reading.

Delhi’s air quality monitoring network reported that the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed the 400 mark at twenty locations across the city on Thursday, indicating severe pollution levels. Among these, the monitoring station in Jahangirpuri posted the highest figure, making it the most polluted neighbourhood in the capital at that moment.

An AQI above 400 falls into the "severe" category, where health officials warn that even healthy individuals may experience respiratory distress, irritation of the eyes, and reduced lung function. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) issued an advisory urging residents to limit outdoor activities, keep windows closed, and use N‑95 masks if exposure is unavoidable.

The spike comes as Delhi enters its winter season, a period traditionally associated with stagnant air and increased emissions from vehicular traffic, construction dust, and crop‑burning in neighboring states. Authorities have announced that additional anti‑smog measures, including temporary restrictions on diesel generators and increased frequency of water‑spraying on roads, will be implemented to curb the deterioration of air quality.

Experts caution that without sustained long‑term interventions—such as stricter vehicular emission norms and a shift to cleaner fuels—the city may continue to face hazardous pollution episodes that pose significant public‑health risks.
