A recent NHTS survey shows that workers in Delhi spend nearly three times more on commuting than their counterparts in urban Bihar.

The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) released data comparing daily commuting expenses of salaried workers in Delhi and urban areas of Bihar. The findings indicate that Delhi employees incur costs almost three times higher than those reported by commuters in Bihar's cities.

The survey, which sampled households across both regions, examined expenditures on public transport, fuel, and other travel-related outlays. While exact figures were not disclosed, the proportional difference highlights a stark disparity in living costs between the national capital and the eastern state.

Analysts suggest that higher wages, greater reliance on private vehicles, and more extensive public‑transport networks in Delhi contribute to the elevated spending. The report underscores the financial burden of commuting for workers in India's major metropolitan hubs compared to smaller urban centres.

Policy experts note that such cost gaps may influence migration patterns and urban planning decisions, urging state governments to consider affordable transport solutions.

The NHTS data will be used by planners and policymakers to assess infrastructure needs and to design interventions aimed at reducing commuting expenses for the workforce.
