Several Delhi residents are unable to avail the free bus travel offered by the Pink Saheli card because their documents list a village or another city as their address.
The Pink Saheli card, a government initiative that offers free bus travel to women, is reportedly inaccessible to many Delhi residents whose official documents list a village or a different city as their address. Investigations by the news agency have revealed that the discrepancy between the address on the card application and the address on identity proofs is the main barrier.
Officials say the scheme requires the applicant’s address to match the residence registered with the local municipal authority. When the address is recorded as a rural village or a distant town, the application is flagged and the card is denied.
The denial has left several women who live and work in Delhi without a reliable and affordable mode of public transport. Many of them rely on private vehicles or expensive ride‑hailing services, adding to their daily commute costs.
The government has not yet issued a statement on how it plans to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, advocacy groups are urging authorities to review the address verification process and extend the card’s benefits to all eligible women in the capital.
