Delhi Police Issues Notice to X to Remove Defamatory Posts About Constitutional Leaders

Delhi Police has served a notice to the social media platform X demanding removal of content deemed defamatory towards constitutional heads, and requiring the platform to provide user details and preserve related data.
Delhi Police has served a notice to the social media platform X on 27 July, demanding the removal of posts that allegedly defame constitutional authorities such as the President, Vice President and Prime Minister. The notice also requires X to furnish details of the users who posted the content and to preserve all related data for investigative purposes.
The action follows a similar directive issued earlier this month to the platform for posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Delhi Police’s social media monitoring team scans for objectionable material and issues notices when content violates the law.
The notice was issued after a review of several posts that allegedly contained false statements and insults towards constitutional heads. Delhi Police has warned that failure to comply could result in legal action under the Information Technology Act and the Indian Penal Code.
The move comes amid heightened political tensions following recent student protests, but the police have said it is focused solely on ensuring that online content does not undermine the dignity of constitutional institutions.
