Delhi police detained more than 7,000 participants of a Cockroach Janta Party rally at Jantar Mantar, citing security concerns, and later released them while party leaders face legal proceedings.

Delhi police arrested over 7,000 individuals who had gathered for a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party at Jantar Mantar, stating that the large crowd posed a security risk. The police denied permission for the rally to proceed and pre‑emptively detained participants before the event could start.

During the early hours of the protest, stone‑pelting incidents were reported, resulting in injuries to seven police personnel. The police said the arrests were necessary to prevent escalation and protect public order.

Later in the day, authorities released the majority of the detainees after reviewing the cases, but announced that senior opposition leaders and activists would be dealt with through the regular legal process. Opposition figures criticised the mass detention as excessive and politically motivated.

The incident has sparked a debate over the balance between law‑enforcement prerogatives and the right to peaceful assembly, with civil‑rights groups calling for a transparent inquiry into the police actions.
