The Delhi Master Plan 2047, released by the Delhi Development Authority, sets a target of 40 lakh new residential units by 2047 to address the city’s housing crunch. The plan introduces a land‑pooling mechanism that allows developers to acquire multiple plots and consolidate them into larger, more efficient developments. In addition, it earmarks a significant number of rental units to provide affordable housing options for lower‑income residents.
Under the land‑pooling scheme, landowners can sell portions of their property to a single developer, who will then create mixed‑use developments that include residential, commercial and public spaces. This approach is expected to reduce fragmentation, improve infrastructure delivery and increase the overall density of new housing.
The plan also stresses the importance of sustainable urban growth, with provisions for green spaces, improved transport connectivity and upgraded utilities. Officials anticipate that the combined efforts will help Delhi accommodate its projected population growth while curbing the rise of informal settlements.
