Delhi Hit by Heavy Rain: Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos Prompt Red Alert

Heavy rainfall in Delhi has caused widespread waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions, prompting authorities to issue a red alert.

Heavy rain over Delhi on Thursday led to extensive waterlogging across several parts of the city, with streets in South and Central Delhi turning into makeshift canals.
The sudden deluge stalled traffic, causing gridlock on major arteries such as the Ring Road and the Delhi‑Gurgaon Expressway. Buses, private vehicles and two‑wheelers were stranded for hours, and many commuters had to seek alternative routes.
In response, the Delhi Police and the Traffic Police issued a red alert for the entire city, urging motorists to avoid non‑essential travel and to use public transport where possible. The Red Alert also prompted the deployment of additional water pumps and emergency response teams to clear clogged drains.
Meteorological authorities had predicted heavy showers for the region, but the intensity of the rainfall exceeded expectations, catching many residents off guard.
The city’s municipal corporation has announced plans to improve drainage infrastructure and to conduct a review of the current water‑management system in light of the recent incidents.
