The governments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have announced a coordinated scheme to replace old vehicles within a year, aiming to curb pollution and improve road safety.

New Delhi, Chandigarh and Lucknow – The state administrations of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have jointly set a twelve‑month target to phase out ageing motor vehicles under a newly announced replacement programme. The scheme, which will be rolled out by the respective transport departments, seeks to retire high‑emission cars, two‑wheelers and commercial trucks that fail to meet current emission norms.

Officials said the initiative will combine financial incentives, such as subsidised scrappage values and low‑interest loans, with stricter registration checks to ensure that older polluting vehicles are taken off the roads. The goal is to reduce urban air‑quality indices and align with the central government's push for greener mobility.

The rollout will begin with a pilot in Delhi's most polluted zones, followed by parallel phases in Haryana's industrial belts and Uttar Pradesh's major cities. Authorities have urged vehicle owners to register for the scheme before the deadline, warning that non‑compliance could lead to higher registration fees and possible bans.

While the exact budget allocation remains under review, the three governments have pledged coordinated monitoring to track progress and report quarterly to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
