Delhi Govt to Install Free Solar Rooftops for 2.3 Lakh Households

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta unveiled a Delhi solar policy that will provide zero‑cost rooftop solar systems to 2.30 lakh homes, aiming to turn the city into a net‑producer of electricity.
Delhi's administration announced a landmark solar initiative that will equip 2.30 lakh residential units with rooftop photovoltaic panels at no upfront cost. The scheme, presented by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is designed to shift households from electricity consumers to producers, reducing dependence on the grid.
Under the policy, the government will cover the entire capital expense for the solar installations, while households will only pay a nominal maintenance charge. The generated power will be fed directly into the home, and any surplus will be exported to the Delhi electricity network, with the state providing a subsidy on the electricity bill for the excess.
The plan aligns with Delhi's broader climate goals of cutting carbon emissions and curbing peak‑load pressure on the grid. Officials estimate that the rollout could shave off several hundred megawatts of demand during daytime hours, translating into lower overall power procurement costs for the city.
Implementation will be coordinated through the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission and approved solar vendors. Beneficiary households will be selected based on income criteria and existing electricity consumption patterns, ensuring that low‑income families receive priority.
