The central government has approved the creation of an independent Delhi PW engineering cadre, separating 3,214 sanctioned posts from the CPWD cadre after three decades of demand.
New Delhi – The Union Ministry has given the green light to a long‑standing demand from the Delhi Public Works Department (PW) to carve out a distinct engineering cadre. The decision separates 3,214 sanctioned engineering positions from the existing Central Public Works Department (CPWD) cadre, creating a dedicated Delhi PW engineering cadre.
The move, announced in a recent government order, ends a 30‑year wait by Delhi’s PW officials for a separate recruitment and service structure. Officials said the new cadre will enable more focused deployment of engineers for the capital’s infrastructure projects and streamline administrative control.
The approval also outlines the recruitment process, salary scales and promotion pathways specific to the Delhi PW cadre, aligning them with the city’s unique developmental needs. The government expects the first batch of engineers to be inducted within the next financial year.
Stakeholders, including senior engineers and union representatives, welcomed the decision, noting that it will address long‑standing grievances about career progression and workload distribution within the PW department.
