Deficit Rains and Rising AC Use Spike Power Consumption and Bills in Telangana

Lower-than-expected rainfall combined with higher air‑conditioner usage has driven up electricity demand, leading to higher consumer bills across Telangana.
The monsoon this year has fallen short of forecasts, leaving many reservoirs in Telangana below critical levels and pushing daytime temperatures higher than usual. With less cloud cover and hotter afternoons, households and commercial premises are turning to air‑conditioners more frequently to maintain comfort.
Utility data released this week shows a noticeable jump in electricity consumption compared with the same period last year, largely attributed to the surge in AC operation. In several districts, peak load readings have crossed previous summer highs, prompting concerns among grid operators.
As a direct result, the average residential electricity bill has risen by several hundred rupees, a burden that many consumers are feeling keenly. The Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission has warned that the trend could persist if rainfall deficits continue and AC usage remains unchecked.
Authorities are urging citizens to adopt energy‑saving practices, such as using timers, setting thermostats at moderate levels, and taking advantage of natural ventilation where possible, to curb the upward pressure on the power grid and household expenses.
