Rajnath Singh opened the newly redeveloped Hutatma Smruti Smarak at Patradevi, paying tribute to the satyagrahis who fought for Goa's liberation.

New Delhi, Aug 26 — Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited Goa on Saturday to inaugurate the refurbished Hutatma Smruti Smarak at Patradevi. The memorial, rebuilt under the state government's heritage initiative, honors the satyagrahis who participated in the 1961 liberation movement that ended Portuguese rule.

During the ceremony, Singh highlighted the importance of remembering the sacrifices of those freedom fighters and stressed that their legacy continues to inspire the nation’s defence forces. State officials, including Goa's Chief Minister, were present and laid wreaths at the site.

The upgraded complex now features a landscaped garden, informational panels in Hindi, English and Konkani, and a digital audio‑visual display narrating the historic struggle. The inauguration marks the first major commemorative event for the Goa liberation movement since the monument’s original construction in the 1970s.

Local residents gathered to witness the event, expressing pride that their region’s contribution to India's freedom is being formally recognised at the national level. The memorial is expected to become a focal point for educational tours and annual remembrance ceremonies.

The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence, followed by a cultural program showcasing Goan folk music and dance, underscoring the blend of historical reverence and regional heritage.
