The Central Water Commission has returned Karnataka's Mekedatu project report, citing changes in the revised scheme and excess water use. The state must resubmit with updated details and compliance measures.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) returned the Mekedatu project report submitted by the Karnataka government last month, demanding a comprehensive revision of the plan. The commission highlighted alterations in the revised scheme and flagged excessive consumptive water use as key concerns. It also noted that the project's water consumption exceeds the allocations set by the Supreme Court in its earlier ruling on the region. In addition to the Mekedatu plan, the revised proposal now incorporates components of the Shivanasamudra hydroelectric project, further complicating the water balance. Karnataka authorities have been instructed to resubmit the report with detailed compliance measures and updated data before any further approvals can be granted.
