CTI urges Delhi police to halt rallies till Bhai Dooj, warns of ₹14,000 crore loss

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) wrote to the Delhi Police Commissioner demanding a ban on all rallies, dharnas and protests in central Delhi until Bhai Dooj, citing an estimated business loss of ₹14,000 crore during the festive season.

During the peak of the festive shopping period, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) submitted a formal letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner urging authorities to prohibit any rally, dharna or public demonstration in central Delhi until the Bhai Dooj holiday. The trade body argues that such gatherings disrupt commercial activity and deter shoppers, thereby harming businesses that rely heavily on festival sales.

CTI estimates that the cumulative effect of recent protests and processions has already cost the city's retail and services sector around ₹14,000 crore. The association contends that allowing further rallies would exacerbate the loss and strain an economy already coping with supply‑chain pressures.

The police have not publicly responded to the request at the time of reporting. Officials are expected to review the letter and balance public order considerations with the commercial concerns raised by the chamber.

If the ban is implemented, merchants anticipate a smoother flow of customers and a quicker recovery of sales figures that have been dented by repeated disruptions in recent weeks.
