The Communist Party of India (Marxist) reports high campus activity among its youth in West Bengal, but the number of members formally joining the party remains low.

West Bengal's Communist Party of India (Marxist) has observed a paradox among its youth wing. While student groups affiliated with the party are visibly active in university and college campuses across the state, the transition from campus activism to formal party membership is limited.

Party officials attribute the gap to a combination of factors, including the appeal of broader political options for young voters and the perceived rigidity of party structures. Despite organizing rallies, debates and cultural programs, the CPI(M) has struggled to convert these engagements into long‑term cadre recruitment.

The trend raises concerns within the party about sustaining its traditional support base in the state, especially as it seeks to rebuild after recent electoral setbacks. Analysts suggest that revitalising grassroots participation may require reforms in outreach and internal democracy.

The CPI(M) leadership has indicated plans to review its youth engagement strategy, aiming to bridge the divide between campus activism and party enrollment, though concrete measures have yet to be announced.
