A Mohali couple committed suicide by ingesting Celphos after a travel agent allegedly pocketed Rs 14 lakh and did not arrange their overseas travel.

Mohali police have registered a case after a married couple was found dead at their residence, having consumed the pesticide Celphos. The investigation revealed that the pair had approached a classmate who worked as a travel agent, handing over Rs 14 lakh with the expectation of being sent abroad for work.

According to the police report, the travel agent failed to make any arrangements for the couple's overseas travel despite receiving the full amount. The couple, reportedly distressed by the broken promise and financial loss, allegedly resorted to ingesting the toxic pesticide.

Authorities have detained the travel agent for questioning and are probing the fraud as a possible motive behind the suicide. The case is being treated as a criminal matter under sections related to cheating and abetment of suicide.

The incident has raised concerns about unregulated travel agencies and the vulnerability of individuals seeking overseas employment through informal channels.
