District council representative Baidyanath Mahato set out for his usual morning walk in the village of Dumra, located in Sitamarhi district of Bihar, on Saturday morning. While he was on the route, four unidentified gunmen opened fire, discharging a total of eight bullets that struck the elected official.
The assailants fled the scene immediately after the shooting, leaving Mahato dead at the spot. Local residents quickly gathered, but the violence escalated when a police team arrived to secure the area. According to eyewitnesses, the crowd turned hostile and forced the officers to retreat, resulting in injuries to about half a dozen police personnel.
Police officials confirmed that the injured officers received medical attention on site and were later shifted to a nearby hospital. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking to identify and apprehend the four gunmen responsible for the killing.
