The Congress party has called for an impartial investigation into alleged inaccuracies in the voter lists used for the recent Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, also urging a suspension of the SIR process.
Congress officials said that discrepancies discovered in the voter lists for the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC) elections raise serious concerns about the credibility of the electoral roll. The party has formally requested an independent probe to verify the accuracy of the lists and to identify any systemic lapses.
In a statement, Congress urged the Election Commission of India to halt the SIR (Supplementary Incremental Roll) exercise until the probe is completed, arguing that proceeding without clarification could compromise the fairness of the ongoing poll process.
The party has written to the Election Commission seeking immediate action, but the commission has not yet issued a public response. Opposition parties and civil‑society groups have also called for greater transparency in the preparation of voter rolls.
If the probe confirms the alleged errors, Congress says it could lead to a re‑examination of the MLC results and prompt corrective measures to safeguard future elections in the state.
