The Indian National Congress has appealed to President Droupadi Murmu to ensure that Assam’s downstream water interests are protected amid the Upper Siang hydroelectric project.

The Indian National Congress (INC) has formally urged President Droupadi Murmu to safeguard Assam’s downstream water interests in the Upper Siang hydroelectric project. The party’s statement, released through its Delhi office, stresses that the project could alter water flow patterns affecting agriculture, fisheries and livelihoods in Assam.

The Upper Siang project, located in Arunachal Pradesh, is a proposed 1,200 MW hydroelectric scheme on the Siang River. While the project aims to boost regional power generation, environmental and hydrological studies have raised concerns about its impact on downstream states.

Assam’s leaders have long warned that reduced water flow could jeopardise irrigation schemes and flood control measures. The INC’s appeal seeks a comprehensive assessment of downstream effects before any construction proceeds.

President Murmu, who has overseen several water‑resource initiatives, is expected to review the project’s environmental clearance and consult with state governments to ensure equitable water sharing agreements are upheld.
