The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts repeated thunderstorms and showers across Karnataka’s coastal belt, including Mangalore, until October 10.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an advisory warning that the coastal stretch of Karnataka will experience a series of thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rain spells from now until October 10. The forecast covers the entire Konkan coastline, with Mangalore, Udupi and nearby districts highlighted as the most affected zones.

Meteorologists attribute the unsettled weather to a low‑pressure system moving eastward over the Arabian Sea, which is expected to trigger convective activity over the landward side of the Western Ghats. Rainfall intensity could reach 50‑70 mm in 24 hours in isolated pockets, raising the risk of flash flooding in low‑lying areas and water‑logging on major roads.

Local authorities have been advised to monitor drainage networks and keep emergency response teams on standby. The IMD recommends that commuters avoid non‑essential travel during peak thunderstorm periods, and that farmers secure crops that are vulnerable to sudden downpours.

This spell of rain follows a relatively dry October so far, and officials expect it to replenish water reservoirs while also posing short‑term challenges for transportation and public safety.
