Chief Minister Vijay announced the cancellation of the proposed Parandur airport following strong opposition from local farmers, citing the need to protect agricultural land.
Chief Minister Vijay announced today that the government will withdraw the proposal to build an airport at Parandur, a decision taken after sustained protests by farmers in the area. The project, which had been under consideration for several months, was expected to involve the acquisition of large tracts of farmland surrounding the village.
Farmers and local agricultural groups staged rallies, road blockades and submitted petitions, arguing that the airport would displace families and reduce fertile land needed for cultivation. They demanded that the government prioritize the livelihood of the agrarian community over infrastructure development.
In a brief statement, the CM said the administration respects the concerns of the farming community and will not proceed with any plan that jeopardises their land. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting agricultural resources and promised to explore alternative sites for the airport that do not affect farmers.
The cancellation is expected to halt any immediate land acquisition processes and may lead the state to reassess its infrastructure priorities, balancing development goals with the interests of rural stakeholders.
