Chief Minister Majhi officially opened a new Doppler weather radar at Sambalpur, aimed at strengthening Odisha's weather‑forecasting network.
Sambalpur, Odisha – The state’s chief minister, Majhi, presided over the inauguration of a state‑of‑the‑art Doppler weather radar station on the premises of the regional meteorological office. The facility, equipped with modern scanning technology, will feed real‑time atmospheric data to the India Meteorological Department’s forecasting models.
Officials said the radar will significantly improve the accuracy of short‑term forecasts for the western part of Odisha, especially for severe weather events such as cyclones, thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Enhanced detection capabilities are expected to provide earlier warnings to disaster‑management agencies and local communities.
The installation forms part of a broader effort by the state government to upgrade its disaster‑risk infrastructure. Similar radars have already been commissioned in other regions, and the Sambalpur unit will fill a critical coverage gap in the state's weather‑monitoring network.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the state’s Department of Science and Technology, the India Meteorological Department, and local administrators, who highlighted the radar’s role in safeguarding lives and supporting agricultural planning.
