Rising temperatures and unchecked development are intensifying floods, landslides and heatwaves across Nepal, Assam and Kerala, according to climate analysts.
Climate analysts say that the combined effect of global warming and rapid, unplanned development is turning natural hazards into more frequent and severe events across the Himalayan region and eastern and southern India. In Nepal, erratic monsoon patterns and glacial melt have led to higher river flows, triggering landslides that threaten villages perched on steep slopes.
In India's northeastern state of Assam, expanding settlements along riverbanks and inadequate drainage have amplified the impact of seasonal floods, leaving crops and infrastructure vulnerable.
Further south, Kerala's coastal districts are experiencing intensified heatwaves and coastal erosion as construction encroaches on mangroves and wetlands that once acted as natural buffers.
Experts caution that without stricter land‑use planning and climate‑resilient infrastructure, the region will see a continued rise in disaster frequency, affecting livelihoods and food security.
