China has sharply condemned India’s recent decision to formally name 27 places in Arunachal Pradesh, a region it claims as part of its territory.

India’s Ministry of Home Affairs announced the formal naming of 27 locations in Arunachal Pradesh earlier this week. The move is part of an effort to standardise place names across the state.

The State of Arunachal Pradesh, located in the far north of India, is a disputed territory that China claims as part of its Tibet region. The naming exercise has been viewed by Beijing as a provocation.

In a statement, China’s foreign ministry condemned the decision, calling it a violation of the 1993 agreement that India and China signed to resolve border issues. Beijing warned that such actions could destabilise the region.

India’s government has defended the naming as a routine administrative act aimed at improving governance and service delivery in the state.

The incident adds to the long‑standing tensions between the two nuclear powers over their shared frontier.
